INTRODUCTION

The following information has been created to assist in overcoming the high level of unemployment and under employment of people who are blind or vision impaired in Australia.

Research undertaken by Vision Australia of people who are blind or vision impaired indicated that 63% who are of working age are unemployed.

The Australian Blindness Forum has obtained further statistics from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relation (DEEWR), noting the significant variation and under representation by people who are blind or vision impaired in DEEWR employment programs.

The ABF Employment Sub committee has been formed in response to the appalling levels of under or unemployment of people who are blind or vision impaired in Australia.

As a result, the Subcommittee has implemented several initiatives to create awareness of the needs and abilities of people who are blind or vision impaired to reduce these levels.  Information about these ABF Employment sub committee initiatives can be found here.
