Jenny’s Story:

Jenny was employed as a coordinator in health services for eleven years before she suddenly lost 60% of her vision in both eyes.

She wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to return to work because of her vision loss, but Jenny was determined to try. She knew she needed support and contacted the Royal Society for the Blind SA (‘RSB’) for assistance. In only a few months and with her employer’s support, her confidence was boosted and she returned to her original full time position.

“Without the help of the RSB Employment Services team I would not be working. After my initial consultation with my case manager, I was provided with Zoom text software, a larger monitor and an electronic magnifier, and they trained me how to use it all. They also ran a staff awareness session on vision impairment at work which helped the other staff understand my needs”

Mandy’s Story:

Mandy is legally blind and has lived with congenital nystagmus (abnormal eye movement) all her life. For the last eight years, Mandy has been employed at Inprint Design as a part-time receptionist and administrator.  Mandy approached the RSB Employment Services team for assistance because she was having difficulty reading fine print and using the computer. The magnification equipment at her workplace had become outdated.

The RSB team introduced her to the Employment in Jeopardy program, and arranged for her to visit the Adaptive Technology Centre (ATC) where she could be assessed and try new equipment.

The Employment Services team applied for funding (through the ATC) to modify her workplace and they were able to supply Mandy with the equipment she needed free of charge.

The equipment has meant Mandy can continue to work and it has boosted her confidence.  “Without the help of the RSB Employment Services team

I would not able to continue my work, be productive and independent. After my initial interview with my case manager, I was provided with ZoomText software, a larger monitor and an electronic desk and portable magnifier.  They have also provided training and onsite support with the installation of my equipment.”
