A Parent’s Role

As the parent of a blind or vision impaired child you have played a vital role in their development to date, helping and supporting them to this point in their lives.
As they now transition towards independence, often parents struggle with the desire to want to help their child instead of supporting and encouraging them to start making their own decisions, which is your prime objective now as a parent.
Below we endeavour to demonstrate some commonly observed positive and negative responses to assist you in best supporting your child’s career pathway, and linking you to support agencies.
Positive & Negative
- Letting go and encouraging independence
- Providing support – not ‘over-support’
- Don’t answer for your child – let them be the communicator
- Let them try new adventures, even if you worry they can’t be achieved
- Be there when you’re needed.
- Remember: negative parents breed negative results.

- Your local Blindness organisation
- Your local Employment Services Provider
- Centrelink Self Service Centres
- University / TAFE Disability Liaison Officers
- Disability Information Resource Centre (‘DIRC’)
- Disability Advocacy and Complaints Service in your state or territory

Whilst it is important for you to now commence adopting a varied role in your child’s life, it is vital to still provide your family supports whilst encouraging and nurturing independence.
