“The Voice of The Blind and Visually Impaired in The Asia Pacific Region”
On 11 December 2015 the book famine for people who are blind or have low vision is a step closer to being resolved after Australia ratified the Marrakesh Treaty overnight in Geneva, a world treaty that facilitates access to published works by visually impaired persons and persons with print disabilities.
The Australian Senate’s Community Affairs References Committee has released its report into the Violence, abuse and neglect against people with disability in institutional and residential settings. This was after many months of public hearings and submissions from interested parties.
There were 30 recommendations in the report, this first of which was a call for a Royal Commission into violence, abuse and neglect of people with disability, with terms of reference to be determined in consultation with people with disability, their families and supporters, and disability organisations.
The other recommendations can be found in the full report; the separate chapters can be found at this link: report into the Violence, abuse and neglect against people with disability in institutional and residential settings.
